If you can visualize yourself achieving a goal, you have the capacity to make it happen.
I truly believe that God doesn't give you dreams for nothing.
He has equipped you to make them reality, so trust Him and take a baby step or a LEAP toward your dream today!
One way you can do that is to create an epic vision board!
It’s never too early or too late to create a vision board! Don’t think that you can only do it at the end of December or early January.
What does a vision board do? It provides visual reinforcement of your dreams and goals and helps you stay laser focused on the vision for your life, where you want to be, who you want to be, and what you want your life to look like.
A vision board is one of the tools I use to change my mindset from negative to positive thinking and to stay focused on my goals. In episode 71, I talked about 3 of my goals that were on my vision board and how they were manifested. So, take a listen to that if you haven’t yet.
Today, I want to tell you about 5 essential things to think about in order to create an epic vision board.
So, how do we do this? How do we create an epic vision board? It’s simple, really.
1. I suggest using my 3-step vision guide to help you brainstorm and plan out what you want visualized on your board. Many people I’ve talked to about creating vision boards say to me, “That sounds like a great idea, but I have no idea what to put on a vision board.” So, that’s why I made a 3-step vision guide for you and you can grab it for free on my website at mandysawyer.com.
Even if you don’t think you need it, get it anyway because it might help you stir up a dream that’s been buried inside and needs to be unleashed. Also, there are printable affirmations, power phrases, and life categories that you can use on your board that are inside that vision guide.
2. Decide where you will strategically place your vision board. This is important. This might determine how large or small or what kind of backing or canvas you use for your board.
Where you place it matters. You need it in a place where you will see it daily. Someplace where you are already going to be. In your workspace, beside your bed, on the fridge, next to the toilet. Wherever it’s going to be in your face.
3. Choose your canvas. It doesn’t have to be fancy and it can be any size that fits your space.
Here is a list of 15 different ideas for your potential vision board canvas:
- Copy paper/colored copy paper - this is great for small spaces, great for teachers to create vision boards with their students. My students always loved colored copy paper for certain assignments. I called it “pretty paper” and that made it even more fun and appealing. Sometimes it’s just the way you word things, right?
- Construction paper - a little thicker, sturdier than regular paper, but still relatively inexpensive if you’re having a vision board party with your kiddos or students and need a lot of canvases.
- Card stock - even sturdier, still light weight, easy to tape or pin up on the wall.
- Poster board - usually the go-to canvas
- Foam board - also a go-to canvas
- Cork board - makes it easy to add or rearrange items
- White board - magnetic, again easy to add or rearrange items, great for people who like to draw or do handwriting art
- Chalk board - usually magnetic as well, and fun to use chalk to draw images or write affirmations
- Actual art canvas - Thick and sturdy, comes in various sizes, could even mod-podge over your vision board, depending on the ink on your images. It could smear, so beware of that.
- Refrigerator - This one’s convenient, especially for making good use of those travel magnets and for any health or diet related goals.
- An entire wall - A friend of mine has used an entire wall or sedition of a wall in her office to display images and affirmations.
- String lights with clips - You can get these from Amazon or places like Hobby Lobby or Big Lots. Simply attach images to the clips.
- Cardboard box - Make good use of those Amazon boxes! Break it down and cut it into the size you need it. Glue on all your images and hang it up.
- Picture frame - A little fancier. Get one that matches your space and your style. Just attach your images to the backing of the frame.
- Dream Journal - Draw, write, and attach images. (I only recommend this IF you are already committed to interacting with your journal DAILY. It does you no good if it’s not in front of you every day.)
Back to the essentials to creating a vision board …
4. Decide how many life categories you want your vision board to cover. Maybe you want a vision board that just focuses on one aspect of your life, like your health, or family, or travel.
Or maybe you want a comprehensive display of your vision for your life, so you create a large board to cover multiple life categories.
Maybe you want 2 small boards that will be displayed in different places, like one at home near your bed and one in your workspace.
It’s entirely up to you. It’s your board.
5. Have FUN locating images in magazines, junk mail, flyers, or printed off the internet. Make sure the images represent one of your dreams or goals that you wrote down on your vision guide (or your own planning page). And write down or cut out words for your quotes or affirmations. Affirmations are best when you use present tense verbs as if that dream or goal is already happening in your life.
Attach those images and words to your board in whatever order works for you. Maybe you are a collage kinda person. Just make sure it’s not so random or chaotic when you lay it all out. You don’t want it to be hard to focus on it and talk it out.
Maybe you like yours more organized and tidy in rows or columns. Whichever way works best for you and is the most appealing to you is the best way to lay it out.
So, here’s a recap on my 5 recommendations for creating your epic vision board!
